Creating origami earrings and basic tutorial.

Right, its been a while since I've updated this blog, but I've been very busy making some beautiful crafts and promoting them. Visit my online shop at www.lisabirchart.etsy.com to see what I've been up to.

Origami Earrings, I've recently displayed/ exhibited my earrings in Plymouth College of Art's Summer Show 2012, Upstairs in the Postgrad area. See my artist statement and information about the show here.

These earrings are for sale for approx £7/$12 a pair, in a complimenting origami miso style box, from www.lisabirchart.etsy.com - origami earrings

Tutorial:

You will need, Coloured paper, Ruler, Scissors, Pilers, Varnish, Jewellery Findings and haberdashery elements.

1. These earrings start with a 4 cm square piece of origami or chosen coloured paper, thin papers work best, but if you are a confident folder, you can use some light cardstock. Tip: fold a 6in piece of standard origami paper into quarters, cut out, fold each of these into quarters and you're ready to start.

2. Make your origami cranes, there are thousands of tutorials online for this, so I wont be making another. Work out how many cranes you want for each earring, and that you need to double everything, to make a pair. I've found that 3 cranes for each earring is about the maximum, it becomes very practical otherwise.

3. Get your jewellery findings, you'll need to have french earring hooks, 6mm jumprings (the ones that open), eyepins, flatpins, chains, ribbons, lace, etc etc.

4. Pierce the origami cranes up through from the bottom, so it comes out of their backs, a needle is useful for this.

5. Thread the eye pins though the cranes, and assemble the earring components.

6. Decorate, add your little pieces, charms and anything special you want  to.

7. Varnish your origami crane, and let it dry.

8. Wear and enjoy.

9. If it goes wrong, or you cant be bothered, by some premade ones from me here.

Assignment 3 - Reflective Evaluation

Over the course of this project, I feel that I have achieved a lot. I did everything I could to the best of my ability and I tried not to cut any corners. There are things, such as actual drawing skill that I could improve on. This is mainly through lack of drawing practice after my three years of not drawing while studying photography. I did what I set out to do, I did a project without the use of photography. I did however pick up my camera to gather evidence on my blog, but it was set to auto, and no one was going to open up and check on my meta data.

I feel that it was very valuable to myself personally to embark on a project that encouraged me to draw. I needed to get back into the habit of being able to look and draw anything, an ability I was very concerned that I had totally lost.  I also learnt a lot from talking and working with others, even though I didn't produce any physical work with anyone else, I still feel like I have been working with others to expand my knowledge and ideas. The cat photographs that I received from my facebook friends proved to be very valuable to me. They were the perfect way of working on something using something from someone else, and having the chance to make it my own. I didn't have much of a choice of the photographs that I illustrated, they were what other people wanted to share, they wanted me to illustrate their cats, because they wanted to be part of something interesting.

I learnt that I can't rely on people to be one hundred percent interested in a project, and sometimes people want to collaborate on work, but they really mean they want to call it collaboration and have the other person do everything. This wasn't my personal experience, but something I saw was about to happen and avoided. I also learnt that I can draw better than I thought I could and that I was able to create a set of work in my own style. I think I could have possibly learnt more about the history behind illustration and how it actually began, It was difficult to find a starting point. I can study this in my personal time to expand my subject knowledge.

I feel that this project went well and that I actually did more than I initially intended to do. I wanted to spread my ideas out more, so it covered more of an area. If I had stayed to my original proposal I wouldn't have done so much work, or learnt as much about my own style as I have.  The sources of information that I found were fairly useful. A few of the illustration magazines and textbooks were disappointing with what they contained. I was hoping for more novice level instructions, and instead was faced with expert level instructions, and because this was my first attempt in my life at creating illustration, I was a bit confounded by it all. The most valuable source was a book by Key, about Line illustration from 1900. It explained a lot to me, and phrased everything in a delightful interesting way. I learnt about how lines can express emotion and personality from the way that they are drawn, this was a key notion in my work.
I made the difficult decision not to continue with the tattoo design that I had started. It was hard but there were too many variables for me to deal with for such a short project. It is also something that needs to be finished or it is worthless. Tattoo design would have been very time consuming and I do not feel that my drawing skills are up to that level yet, I feel like I needed a little test project, Like drawing these cats. As a way of building myself up to that tattoo perfected level. I have organised it so that the tattooist will have space to display and use my tattoo designs when I design them in my spare time. He wants to remove some old designs that no one ever has, and likes my style.

The most difficult thing about this project was finding the patience to sit and finish my illustrations. They took a long time, and for some reason I had decided on doing a lot of them.  Each illustration probably took about 4 hours from start to finish, they did start to speed up the more practiced I became with drawing.

The most satisfying thing about this project was making the cards, when all the illustrations were finished and there was a moment of pure girly craftiness. I enjoyed taking the time to decorate and add to my own designs, gluing buttons and pieces of ribbon is strangely therapeutic.

If I could do this project again, there are a few things I would have done differently. I would have made it in a sketchbook, not as an online blog. I find it difficult to include all my little tangents of thoughts and its difficult to show actual artwork. I do accept that it is a good form of instant publishing though. I would have also started to gather more photographs of cats, I would have done this sooner so I hadn't left it so late to the deadline and wasn't so stressed this last week. My timekeeping has been well but I did underestimate the size of this project.

Assignments 2 & 3 - Card Making

I was sat looking at my display of images, and thought, I could take this a step further.

I decided I was going to craft some cards. I've not had much experience creating cards so I thought I'd have an attempt at doing one. I cheated a little bit and brought a card making kit (from Paperchase) This contained pre-folded cards, and envelopes to fit. I chose light pink. It also contained a few buttons, beads, and decorative elements.

I thought about putting the light pink cards through the printer, to print the cat illustrations directly onto it. But then I didn't want to jam my printer, so I printed the images on some bright white card. Then cut them out, and affixed to the cards with mini mounting pads.

I then had a bit of creative fun, with some super glue, and a variety of craft bits and pieces I have collected for a 'just in case' reason. I found a reason to use them, so I went about decorating the cards, my theme was pink, and cats. I had a lot of fun with this, and it was good to extend the illustrations into a different medium. I also made quite a bit of a mess.

Assignments 2 & 3 - Printing and Display

I took my illustrations and I printed them onto a good quality cartridge paper (A5 Daler Rowney, Fine Grain Cartridge, 160g/m2) I used a Kodak photo printer, It took a few experiments to get the paper type and print settings correct, but I'm now really impressed with the result.

I chose not to use traditional art printing methods, I didn't want my work to be produced in a commercial way, I want it to have a more traditional art feel. I wanted to use the same paper that the images were original drawn onto, but to print them at half size. I'm my opinion smaller is better. I much prefer to treasure something that is tiny and brilliant, than something that is huge and over compensating. I have also chosen to display my work in mount boards, the inside of the mount is 4.5" by 6.5". I chose to brighten up my project, by choosing traditionally folksy coloured mounts. These are by Daler Rowney, and include a  seal grey, dusty rose pink, Wedgwood blue, champagne, tan, and moss green. I think these add another layer of understanding to my project. They conform to the Twee aesthetic I was aiming for.

I will be showing these prints in an exhibition - Shop.Art Private View 10th Feb

Assignments 2 & 3 - Cat Illustrations Part 2

Here are my improved images, I have changed small parts using digital manipulation and post production techniques. The main parts that I have edited are the eyes, I wasn't pleased with some of the cats eyes, so I redrew them, scanned, and layered over the original eyes. This is a useful technique as it allows me to change parts without having to draw the entire piece again.

I also culled one of the drawings that I wasn't entirely pleased with.

The main point of these drawings is to examine the use of line in illustration. I have done this practically, I have used traditionalist methods of black ink, in varying line sizes. I have also demonstrated my technical improvements with drawing. I have been able to express a personality through the use of line, and through the use of character and emotion. With cats it has been easy to give them a confused or in different look, as this is how cats naturally look. I wanted to texture my lines to add depth to the flat image, I feel like I have developed this as part of my own style, as well as little cute tricks to make the image more cutesy, such as kisses for noses, and hearts for paw pads.

Assignments 2 & 3 - Cat Illustrations

I took the photographs that I was sent on Facebook, selected a few of the ones that were most suited for what I was looking for. I chose the ones that I thought were the cutest, and the ones that would make the best illustrations.

It took me a fair amount of time to create these images and to develop them as a set. I am proud of what I have achieved. Here are scans, with Photoshopping to the contrast.

Assignment 3 - Facebook

I needed some images to draw from, and because this is a collaborative project, I thought it would be nice to get some images from my friends on Facebook. I posted a status, and I had quite an overwhelming response, this proves that people really do love their cats, and are happy for me to use their images to create some original artwork.

The collaboration is that I will be using other peoples images, It will be a public project. I will upload my illustrations back onto Facebook when I have created them, This will keep a cycle of sharing and working together. Even though I know these people as friends, its interesting to see what type of photographs they send me. I gave basic instructions as a status, and it was on a voluntary basis if anyone wanted to send me their photographs of their cats.

I want to keep this project light hearted and informal, I want personality and openness to be a big part of what I'm trying to do. Using a social network, is a great way of contacting many people that I already know, It is not pressurising like sending emails or letters, and it appeals to peoples better nature. They are on Facebook because they have free time, so they feel they might as well share their cats. Also people really love showing off pictures of their cats on on the internet, I have learnt this through research and partaking in the practice of 'Lolcats'
